Beauty Lecture
On this lecture, Glenn showed us a couple videos that he showed two weeks before, such as the video telling us how are perception of beauty is distorted, which always gets me thinking and agreeing. Well after this, we looked at a couple of famous picture from artists in the past. the first picture was about a goddess being born and her head looking the other way from the viewer. People in the past viewed this portrait as being "beautiful" because she was perfect. And according to a philosopher, beauty meant being perfect. We then looked at a portrait of a average woman, and according to Glenn, she was kind of the first celebrity sort of thing. This portrait was also considered "beautiful" because of the fact that it is actually more real than a goddess being born. This made a lot of sense as well. This lecture as usual got me to think a lot about what beauty is, it's so difficult trying to figure out something that is so obvious, but I guess one thing I do know about beauty is that it always changes over time.

Project 1: Day Without Technology
I chose to do this project last Saturday, seeing that I didn't have any plans set up and didn't have to use my car to go anywhere that day. To me, I thought that by not using any technology, it made my day very limited. I wasn't able to meet up with my friends, because they don't live within walking distance, nor was I able to listen to music and play video games when I was stuck at home. But still it made the day very enjoyable somehow. I didn't do much that day besides eat and walk around a little outside and at home, but it made my day move by so slow and helped me relax. I had a lot of time to think at night as well, because I locked myself upstairs so that my parents didn't have to deal with this project alongside me. I just had many thoughts about how that day was so different than the others, and just compared them. I also did a lot of reminiscing and thought about whats there to come in my future. Overall I just thought a lot about my life both past and future, this project was a really great experience, but if I had a choice to spend another day not using any sort of technology I would probably not spend another day doing this.

Chapter 7 Artists
The first painting that I thought was amazing was The School of Athens, which was done by Raphael. I thought that the arch was very eye grabbing due to its size and circular structure. There is so much things that are going on on this picture, and every single person in the painting is so well drawn and have their emotions, making it so realistic. And to me personally this painting also inspires me, seeing all those students and followers of philosophers ponder and share ideas with one another, makes me want to succeed one day with all the effort I put into my own studies. Having the the sky show in the background in the center portion of the portrait is also amazing, it makes to look so heavenly and peaceful. In conclusion the portrait looks very balanced, creative, and beautiful.
Another portrait that I thought was well done was That Gentleman, which was done by Andrew Wyeth. This would have to be my favorite painting so far in the book. This painting just looks casual to me, nothing really going on except the man's starring off in the corner of the dark room, which really makes me take a deep breath and relax. The details that were shown in this picture makes it amazing as well, such as the worn out shoes, the rusted chair, and the dark and plain wall, it sets the mood just right and makes you wonder what the old man is thinking about.

Literacy
In this lecture we talked about four different types of literacy, text, visual, network, and education. I don't really remember too clearly about this lecture, but I'm still able to remember one thing that Glenn mentioned that got me thinking, which was the discussion about education literacy disappearing. I really do believe that the education literacy is slowly disappearing seeing how fast technology is improving in our lives. Back then and even now people become educated by a teacher so that he or she learn facts and skills in order to survive as adults. But the thing different with today's world and the past is that people now have assess to most of all of human knowledge due to the internet. And seeing that people can go on the internet just from their phones, people now can learn the things they want to learn about anytime of the day. Why would a person have to know what year the United States declared independence? When a person can just look up the information on the spot, with their phones.
Identity lecture
On this lecture we talked about what identity means. We started class by watching certain scenes from the movie avatar, which is a perfect movie to show if you want to talk about one's identity. Before this lecture I always had a basic definition of what identity is, which at the time meant, things that I do which defines me as well as makes me unique. This definition changed after Glenn's explanations as well as examples of some people, creating a sim online that she believed it was her. Identity to me isn't just things that makes us who we are on the outside, such as habits and what we do, but also what the person thinks of themselves in the inside. Identity is something that everyone has, it is the belief of what that the person thinks he or she is, it may be true or it can also be false, both are considered to be identifications and both are just as real.

Chapter 6 Artists
Gary Simmons and Paul Noble.
I enjoyed looking at both of their work, while reading this chapter six. Most of the other paintings seems so complicated even though it somewhat looks like chicken scratch. Paul Noble did a sketching called the Nobspital. This work was done by a "birds eye" perspective, and is 8 feet in height. But those two factors aren't the only reasons why I chose his work. The building itself looks very creative and nice, kind of makes you want to go visit the building. And the picture doesn't look anythings that's complicated and that there isn't much going on, which makes it simple and right to the point.
Gary Simmons also did a huge work as well, but instead he used chalk to portray his work. His artwork is called Boom, and just like Nobspital I thought that it looked very simple and to the point. The artwork is very pleasing to the eye and imagining that this work is actually much bigger in person makes me really want to see it for myself. It looks like the the sketch is going to pop right out to you, and looks very life like.

Campus Art Lecture Analysis
On this lecture, instead of us sitting down like any other normal class would Glenn made us walk around the campus, in search of art. We were all put into groups of three and were told to put a tape around a certain piece that is art to us. Our class had a bunch of interesting choices of what we thought was art. I especially liked the two near our school's entrance, the Rock Tree as well as the tall pillar like thing near our office. The group who chose the pillar had a really good story behind the artwork, it might have sounded like it was stretched a bit, but it was still a great choice. The Rock Tree was great as well, the group who chose that said that the rocks in the ground represented all of the students and that as we go on in our school years, we're going to have to face certain obstacles. This was by far my favorite lecture during the whole year, because it was so full of imagination and made it so that we weren't really in a class, but just enjoying art itself.

Chapter 5 Artists
My favorite picture in chapter 5 was the Deer's Skull with Pedernal, done by Georgia O'Keeffe. This picture is about symmetrical balance. I am kind of a perfectionist, everything has to be done perfectly before I can stop thinking about it or even move onto to something else, making it hard on me whenever I'm asked to do something such as cleaning up or even test questions. It bugs me when something is out of order and makes it seem like I have to fix it so that I can get my mind off. The good thing about the Deer's Skull with Pedernal is that it is very symmetrical on both sides. Making it look so perfect to be, it doesn't look like one side is going to tip over the other, if I were to put a point in the bottom middle portion of the picture to hold up the painting.
Another picture that I thought was amazing was the Delusions of Grandeur II, done by Rene Magritte. This is a sculpture of a body with a background that shows a sky filled with clouds. This sculpture is very unique because everything is out of order the sky looks like its out of balance but the clouds seem perfectly fine which is pretty unique. Not the mention that the body of the woman changes as it gets higher in altitude, making it smaller. This work is very creative and beautiful by how it is all set up to change as you look around the picture.

Chapter 4 Artists
The first portrait I found very appealing to me was The Raft of the Medusa, which was done by Theodore Gericault. Before The moment I layed my eyes onto this picture it was breath taking, the picture to me looks so dramatic. Many things are going on at once and the weather looks dark and serious. The colors that were used in this picture fits right on and everything matches so well together. There is also a lot of movement in this picture which eventually leads you to the top right part of the portrait. The direction in which the people are facing as well as the direction their arms are pointing at, is the reason for why it makes your eyes move. I think that the way the artist thought of using this kind of drawing was nice because it allows people to see the whole picture in detail in a very slow pace following the movement the people are pointing towards.
The second picture that I enjoyed was Chanter, which was done by Emmi Whitehorse. Chanter looks like a simple picture that was done by a person doodling on a paper out of boredom. The reason why I thought this picture was great was becuase of the color that was used in it. The blue color makes it look so refreshing and takes your mind off. It looks like a person's daydream and confusing. Some figures looking like it is upside down and other being unclear of what the figure actually is. The mystery that was in this picture makes you think about what the artist is trying to state, making it a work of art.

Graffiti Lecture
Last weeks lecture was done by Glenn showing the class a video about different types of graffiti and basically the history of it as well. Well before I go any furthure I always thought that grafitti was just a crime and was fully against it. This video has taught me about graffiti in a totally different perspective that I had on graffiti before this lecture. This doesn't mean that I'm totally for graffiti and agree that it is fine to do, but I'm now more tolerant about it as well as more understanding about it as well.
Graffiti is done in many different areas in the world, from the United States all the way to Japan. Graffiti artists see their work as bombing the city, basically meaning that they are fighting the "system". This is surely a rebellious act towards the rules that govern our everyday lives. I think that graffiti is done to show that the world is in chaos and that no one is able to totally take charge of other people. By breaking the rules, graffiti artists may think that they are making their own decision in what they want to do, meaning freedom.

Lecture Review Sept 20
Last week class started off by Glenn showing us a movie called Razors Edge. After watching this movie, I thought that the movie was about viewpoints in life. This movie started off with a man and woman that were in love, but the man decided that he needed to go on a journey to learn about himself more. Glenn turned off the movie after the scene when the man found out that his ex girlfriend murdered his fiance. The man was able to move on with his life and found a new lover, and obtained a greater view in life, but as for his ex girlfriend she told the man that she still loved him. It really amazed me how different the two were at the end, the lady staying exactly the same as she was during the beginning of the movie, and the man having changed so much after his journey. Their viewpoints were very different from each other's.
After the movie, Glenn started his lecture on performance art. The person we talked about for this type of art was Marina Abramovic. I was really amazed at the work that she has done in her life. She made me really think about how a human being could be so extreme such as her. Being art herself and expressing herself by actions that I hope I never have to do. She really inspires me, not in the way of inpiring me to become a perfomance artist, but living life with much more willingness to try things that I have never experienced.

Chapter 3 Artists
During chapter three's reading there was a picture that surprised me. The portrait is called the The Oxbow and was done by Thomas Cole. I thought that this picture was really well painted and was well thought up of. One reason why I thought that this picture stood out to me compared to the others was that it could make people think in two different ways. This picture could look like it is the calm before the storm or the opposite, the sunlight after the storm. The second reason why I was attracted to this picture was that the two opposite factors, chaos and peace, was seperated by a bow shaped curve, instead of a straight line. I thought that in most contrasting pictures two factors are seperated right in the middle by a straight veritcal line. The bow shaped curve in this picture made this picture look so much more beautiful.
The second painting that caught my eyes was called the The Garden of Earthly Delights, which was done by Hieronymus Bosch. This picture at first looked like a picture of paradise, but as soon as I started looking deeper into the picture and payed attention to the detail it looked very weird. All the figures that looked like people were all mutated and are in weird motion. But even though this picture does look a little unappealing to me, I still thought that this picture was great, because this picture shows how imaginitive Bosch is. The fantasy in this picture is very creative.

Chapter 2 Favorites
Chapter 2 asks the question what is art to the reader. This question made me think about what art means to me and what art would mean to someone else. Ofcourse we would both have different perspectives on what art is to us.
There was a point in my life when my friend and I argued over why the Mona Lisa portrait is such a great piece of art and is known to everyone. My friend's answer was because of its age and the fact that it is priceless. I did not agree to his arguement, I believed that its not value that made the art work great it was more of the fact that it felt alive. The fact that it is so realistic and that it seems like the woman in the picture is still there frozen in time, smiling towards the viewer. Sure, we have cameras that can take a picture, which can take a an almost exact representation of what we see, but its not the same.
We see objects and scenerys everyday and taking a picture just means that we can see the same scenery we saw at that time, which might look great, becuase its realistic. But the Mona Lisa portrait makes me think that its just on the boarderline between reality and imagination, it is plain and creative at the same time. This portrait was done by Leonardo da Vinci, and makes me really impressed of how much of a great man he was and still is, he was able to create a art work that is even more popular now in the present than it was in his time, which makes him my favorite chapter 2 artist.
My second favorite artist in this chapter will have to be Claude Monet. Her painting Fisherman's Cottage on the Cliffs at Varengeville makes a beautiful scenery look so pure. The colors she uses for the ocean and trees in the painting makes it look so refreshing and clean. Another reason for why I appreciate this picture is that, if I really imagine that I could see this view in a more realistic view, such as from a camera or if I saw it in person, it won't look as perfect as it does to me shown on the portrait.

September 6th Whats Really Real? lecture analysis
During last weeks lecture we had multiple conversations about various ideas of what is reality is. This lecture was easy for me to understand probably because I took a philosophy class during summer making it so that I could see where Mr. Zucman's thought process was heading at. In my philosophy class we had numerous debates about what is real and how we know something is real, because who knows this may all be a dream. How do we know that something is there? Is it because we can see it or even taste it? Well then that would mean that we're just using our senses to perceive what reality is. Our senses can sometimes deceive us, meaning that judging what is real by using our senses can be incorrect. The one thing that will not deceive us is our mind, and because of that we know what reality is through the usuage of our minds.
Mr.Zucman made a similar analogy to this during his lecture. He asked one of our students what was more meaning full something that is true or truth. He told us that something that we know about (truth) like one of the desks in our classroom means a 100 times less than something that is true to us (mind), such as the student's ex. The feelings the student had for her ex was far greater than what she feels about a desk.
These thoughts made me think about what art truely is. Ofcourse we all know that a painting is there (truth) like the desk in our classroom but the imagination we all create for ourselves of what a painting means is what truely exists(mind).
